A Namibian politician named after Adolf Hitler has chosen to drop his controversial second name ahead of a local election.
Adolf Hitler Uunona, a 69-year-old district administrator in Namibia, told The Namibian that he had officially removed the middle name from his passport to improve his public image.
Uunona is standing for the SWAPO party in the northern Ompundja constituency, where he won by a landslide in 2020 with 85 per cent of the vote. Despite being named after the German dictator, he is an anti-apartheid campaigner and a well-respected figure in the community.
In response to international media attention in 2020, he said: “My father gave me this name Adolf Hitler, but it does not mean I have Adolf Hitler’s character”.
Namibia, once known as German South West Africa, was under German imperial rule from 1884 to 1915. German names and place names remain in parts of the country and the people speak German.
Imagine a man a black man for that matter called Adolf Hitler. You could not make this up.
