Driver Involved In Anthony Joshua Fatal Road Crash Could be Prosecuted

The driver involved in the fatal road crash which injured former British World heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, may be prosecuted for reckless driving, a source familiar with the investigation said.

Speaking from Nigeria’s capital Abuja the source who does not want to be named said that findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) showed the vehicle was driven at excessive speed and was involved in wrongful overtaking—offences regarded as serious breaches of traffic regulations and grounds for criminal liability when deaths occur.

According to the source, investigators are finalising documentation for the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division, which is working with prosecutors to determine appropriate charges. Prosecution for dangerous or reckless driving causing death is said to be under consideration. ” The police are looking at every angle after reviewing this incident where lives were lost.” The source said.

The source also confirmed that Joshua sustained a fracture in one of his legs during the crash.

Although authorities are yet to make a formal public statement, the incident has renewed public debate on road safety and accountability on Nigerian highways.

The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.

Accident scene Where Anthony Joshua Lost Two friends

Joshua, 36, is expected to remain at the Duchess International Hospital, where his condition is described as “stable”, until the New Year.

His mum Yeta Odusanya has been at his bedside, but wider family members have so far not been allowed to visit him inside the private hospital in Lagos.

Joshua reportedly said: “I feel pain all over my body” after the crash, which killed his best friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, both aged 36.

David Joshua, who is an older brother of Joshua’s dad Robert, said: “We have not been allowed to see him, but from information given by authorities, he is responding to treatment.”

Sina and Latif, who were sitting on the same side of the Lexus, are believed to have died instantly.

It is understood Joshua was seated behind the driver, along with another passenger, when the crash occurred.
